![]() She is on stage for the entire opera, to represent that what we could be seeing is what she is seeing In our acclaimed production by Alessandro Talevi, the idea that the visitations might be a product of the Governess’ fertile imagination is always retained, as: ![]() Britten and Piper were careful not to interpret the story and impose meaning, but rather to shift the ambiguity of the novella to another medium and leave it to subsequent generations to explore and interpret as they see fit. This ambiguity at the heart of The Turn of the Screw can be found in many of Britten’s operas, making the novella particularly suitable for his operatic treatment. In a 2012 commentary in the New Yorker, Brad Leithauser wrote that the novella “is rigorously committed to lack of commitment”. Back in 1907, Oliver Elton questioned whether “the two ghosts who can choose to which persons they will appear, are facts, or delusions of the young governess who tells the story”. For many years, critics have disputed whether the apparitions in the novella are real or not. ![]()

The Landmark Herodotus by Herodotus6/28/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() (Or, indeed, about virtually anything.) And yet to us graduate students in the mid-nineteen-eighties the word “father” seemed to reflect something hopelessly parental and passé about Herodotus, and about the sepia-toned “good war” that was his subject. ![]() ![]() Herodotus’ Histories-a chatty, dizzily digressive nine-volume account of the Persian Wars of 490 to 479 B.C., in which a wobbly coalition of squabbling Greek city-states twice repulsed the greatest expeditionary force the world had ever seen-represented the first extended prose narrative about a major historical event. The risible figure in question was Herodotus, known since Roman times as “the Father of History.” The sobriquet, conferred by Cicero, was intended as a compliment. History-the rational and methodical study of the human past-was invented by a single man just under twenty-five hundred years ago just under twenty-five years ago, when I was starting a graduate degree in Classics, some of us could be pretty condescending about the man who invented it and (we’d joke) his penchant for flowered Hawaiian shirts. ![]() |
